SALT LAKE CITY — The Great Salt Lake Collaborative and the Great Salt Lake Alliance are partnering to expand journalism and public engagement about the future of the Great Salt Lake.
The new partnership will support additional multimedia reporting focused on the lake’s environmental, economic and community impacts, while helping Utahns better understand policies and solutions aimed at protecting and preserving the lake.
“Great Salt Lake is one of Utah’s most important environmental and economic assets, and meaningful progress depends on an informed and engaged public,” said Lindsie Smith, executive director of the Great Salt Lake Alliance. “We’re proud to partner with the Great Salt Lake Collaborative to expand trusted, accessible reporting that helps Utahns better understand both the urgency of the lake’s challenges and the opportunities to protect its future together.”
“This partnership reflects a shared commitment to ensuring Utahns have the information they need to understand why Great Salt Lake matters to every aspect of life in Utah,” said Heather May, director of the Great Salt Lake Collaborative. “Sustained journalism has played a critical role in elevating awareness about the lake’s decline, and this support will allow us to deepen our reporting and better engage communities across the state.”
The Great Salt Lake Alliance brings together businesses, conservation groups, community leaders and policymakers to advance collaborative solutions that support Utah’s economy, environment and communities.
Founded in 2022, the Great Salt Lake Collaborative is a coalition of Utah newsrooms, media organizations and universities that has transformed public understanding of the crisis facing Great Salt Lake through shared, solutions-focused journalism.
Partner news organizations include Amplify Utah, Davis Journal, FOX 13 News, KSL.com, KSL NewsRadio, KSL-TV, KRCL, KUER, PBS Utah, Standard-Examiner, The Salt Lake Tribune, Utah News Dispatch and Utah Public Radio. They collectively educate an audience that spans the state and its political, economic, cultural and demographic fault lines.
Through the agreement, the Great Salt Lake Alliance will underwrite one year of reporting by Collaborative newsrooms. The support comes at a particularly important time with the lake set to drop to a new low this fall due to record-low snowpack and extreme drought. In addition, Utah leaders have set a goal to restore the lake by the time the state hosts the 2034 Winter Games.
Stories produced through the partnership will be shared across Collaborative newsrooms and published on greatsaltlakenews.org. Reporting will also be promoted through the Collaborative’s newsletter and social media channels.
The partnership also includes opportunities for public engagement. GSLC is surveying Utahns about the information and stories they most want related to efforts to restore the lake by 2034.
